Activate new free ChatGPT features that OpenAI hasn't officially announced

In 5 minutes, enable hidden free ChatGPT capabilities - custom instructions, memory, and file analysis - without a Plus subscription

  1. 1.Open chatgpt.com and sign in to your free account. If you don't have an account, sign up with your email. In the bottom left corner, click your name (or profile icon) and select Settings.

    If the service is unavailable in your region, use a VPN connected to a country where ChatGPT works.

  2. 2.In Settings, find the Personalization tab. Make sure the Custom Instructions toggle is on. Click Custom Instructions and fill in two fields: the first about you, the second about how ChatGPT should respond. This tailors all future chats to you automatically.

    Custom Instructions are now available to all free users - previously a Plus-only feature. If the toggle is missing, refresh the page or clear your browser cache.

    Memory has been enabled for free accounts since August 2025. You can manage it via Settings -> Memory -> Manage, deleting individual facts.

    Web search is free for all users. If the globe icon is missing, refresh the page. Search is powered by OpenAI's own search system.

    Creating custom GPTs is now available on the free tier with a limit on quantity. If the feature is blocked, it's a regional restriction - try using a VPN.
