Understanding AI models

🧠

What is a Large Language Model (LLM)?

A Large Language Model (LLM) is an AI system trained on vast amounts of text to understand and generate human language. Unlike traditional software with explicit rules, LLMs learn patterns from billions of web pages, books, and code.

Modern LLMs power ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and most AI assistants. They can write, translate, summarise, reason, code, and answer questions across almost any topic.

  • GPT-5.5 (OpenAI) - multimodal, top reasoning, used in ChatGPT
  • Claude Opus 4.7 (Anthropic) - strong in analysis, coding, and long documents
  • Gemini 2.5 Pro (Google) - fast, built into Google Search and Workspace
  • DeepSeek R1 (DeepSeek) - open-source reasoning model, highly competitive
  • Llama 4 Maverick (Meta) - open-weights, free to self-host
⚙️

Model Parameters - What the Numbers Mean

Every specification in our table tells you something specific about a model's capabilities, cost, and use case.

Score
0-100
Composite benchmark score (MMLU×20% + GPQA×30% + HumanEval×25% + SWE-Bench×25%). Higher is generally better.
Params (B)
Billions
Total model parameters in billions. More parameters usually means stronger reasoning, but slower and more expensive.
Context
Tokens
Maximum text length the model can process at once. 1K tokens ≈ 750 words. 128K fits a 100-page book.
Speed
tok/s
Output tokens per second via API. Higher = faster responses. Matters for real-time products.
Input $/1M
USD
Cost per million input (prompt) tokens. Cheap: $0.05-$0.3. Premium: $5-$15+.
Output $/1M
USD
Cost per million output tokens. Typically 3-5× more expensive than input.
📊

Understanding Benchmarks

Benchmarks are standardised tests to compare models fairly. Each tests a different cognitive ability:

MMLU
% correct
57 subjects: math, history, law, medicine. Tests broad knowledge. GPT-4: ~87%.
GPQA
% correct
PhD-level science questions. Tests deep reasoning. Above 60% = expert level.
HumanEval
% correct
Python coding problems. 90%+ = excellent coding assistant. Most frontier models: 85-95%.
SWE-Bench
% resolved
Real GitHub issues. Measures ability to fix real bugs. 50%+ is very strong today.

Note: Benchmark scores should be compared within the same evaluation setup.

💰

Pricing & Speed

AI model pricing has dropped 100× in 2 years. What cost $20/1M tokens in 2023 now costs $0.15.

  • Free: Gemini Flash, DeepSeek V3, Llama (self-hosted) - great for prototyping
  • Budget $0.05-$1/1M: Claude Haiku, GPT-4o Mini, Gemini Flash
  • Mid $1-5/1M: Claude Sonnet, GPT-4o, Gemini Pro
  • Premium $5-20/1M: Claude Opus, GPT-4 Turbo - for highest quality tasks
Token: Token - the basic unit AI splits text into. 1 token ≈ 4 characters or 0.75 words. Prices are always quoted per 1 million tokens.
Context window: Context window - the maximum number of tokens a model can see in one request. 8K fits a short article. 128K fits a 100-page book. 1M+ fits an entire novel.

Larger context = more expensive per request. A 1M-context model typically costs 3-5× more than a 128K one.

🔓

Open Source vs Proprietary Models

Open-source models have public weights - run on your own hardware. Proprietary models are API-only.

Open Source
  • Full data privacy - runs locally
  • No per-token cost after setup
  • Can fine-tune on your data
  • Llama 4, DeepSeek R1, Qwen, Gemma
Proprietary
  • No GPU or setup required
  • Always latest version
  • Higher capability ceiling
  • GPT-4o, Claude 3.5, Gemini 2.0
🎯

How to Choose the Right Model

The best model depends entirely on your use case:

  • Coding / SWE → sort by SWE-Bench. Claude Sonnet, GPT-4.1, DeepSeek V3
  • Long documents → sort by Context. Gemini 1.5 Pro (2M tokens)
  • Real-time chat → sort by Speed. Gemini Flash, GPT-4o Mini
  • Budget-constrained → filter price < $1/1M. DeepSeek V3, Gemini Flash
  • Private data → filter OSS = true. Run Llama 4 or Qwen locally
  • Science research → sort by GPQA. Claude Opus, Gemini 2.5 Pro
  • Best overall → sort by Score. Top 5 changes monthly
