Break down a complex problem step by step with ChatGPT - and understand every step, not just the answer
In 10 minutes, turn on Study Mode in ChatGPT and work through a problem one guiding question at a time: from the task statement to a verified result
- 1.Open chatgpt.com and sign in to a free account (or create one - an email is enough). Start a new regular chat: Study Mode does not work in temporary chats or projects.
Study Mode is available on all ChatGPT plans, including the free one, in the browser and in mobile apps.
ChatGPT ↗About this tool - 2.Turn on Study Mode: in the message input field, type @study and select «Study» from the suggested options. Or tap the «+» next to the input field and find «Study» in the menu. On a phone - the same path via «+».
If the «Study» option is not showing, find it through search in the menu - the location of menu items depends on the app version. Direct link: chatgpt.com/studymode.
ChatGPT Study Mode ↗ - 3.Paste the problem statement and copy the prompt below. Fill in the placeholders in square brackets: the subject, the problem statement, and what you have already tried. If the problem is in a photo - attach the image and say exactly which example to work on.
Before starting, ask ChatGPT to restate the problem in its own words: one misread number or sign in a photo can ruin the whole solution.
ChatGPT Study Mode ↗PromptI am a [GRADE, COURSE LEVEL, OR JOB TITLE]. Subject or field: [SUBJECT]. Here is the problem statement: [PROBLEM TEXT]. I have already tried: [YOUR STEP, OR 'NOT STARTED YET']. First, briefly restate the problem in your own words and ask me whether you understood it correctly. Do not give me the final answer. Ask one guiding question at a time, wait for my response, and check each of my steps. If I make a mistake - show me exactly where it is and give a hint, not the solution. At the end, suggest a way to verify the result.
What this prompt doesThe prompt is in English - you can copy it as is. Replace the three placeholders: your level (for example, «2nd year university student»), the subject, and the problem text. The point of the prompt: to stop ChatGPT from giving a ready-made answer and make it guide you one question per step, checking each of your moves. - 4.Answer each of ChatGPT's guiding questions in your own words and take the next step yourself - on paper or in a draft, not in the chat. After each step, send it and ask it to check that specific move before moving on.
If ChatGPT blurts out the answer anyway, write: «Go back to hints and ask one question at a time». If the explanation gets too complicated - ask it to break down the previous step with a simpler example or analogy.
- 5.Once you reach a result, verify it: redo the calculations yourself and plug the value you found back into the original problem. For problems without equations - compare the answer against the given data and the task requirements.
ChatGPT can make mistakes even in calculations - double-check important results yourself. If this is graded work, follow your school's rules on AI.
