Set up Gemini in Google Docs to automate text in 10 minutes

Enable the AI assistant right inside your document to write, edit, and summarize text without switching tabs

  1. 1.Open Google Docs at docs.google.com and sign in to your Google account. Create a new document: click «+» (Blank) on the home page.

If your account doesn't have a Google One AI Premium subscription yet, you'll be offered a two-month free trial. After that period, the subscription fee will be automatically charged to your card - cancel the trial before it ends if you don't want to pay.

  2. 2.Check if Gemini is activated in your document. In the top right corner, you'll see a «Help me write» button (star icon) or the Gemini sidebar on the right. If it's not there, click «Tools» in the top menu -> «Gemini» or look for a «Try Gemini» button.

Gemini is available to Google One AI Premium subscribers. New users get 2 months free, then a monthly fee is automatically charged. At this point, Google will ask you to link a payment method (card) - this is normal for starting a trial, but remember to cancel before it ends.

  3. 3.To generate text from scratch: place your cursor on an empty line and click «Help me write» (or the star icon next to the cursor). In the field that appears, paste the prompt below, replacing [TOPIC] with your topic, and press Enter. Gemini will suggest a draft - click «Insert» to add it to your document, or «Refine» to modify it.

Don't enter personal or confidential data into the prompt - the text is processed by AI and may be used to improve the service.

    Google Docs (Gemini)
    Prompt
Write a clear and structured draft about [TOPIC]. Include: 1) a short introduction, 2) three key points with one sentence each, 3) a brief conclusion. Keep it under 200 words. Tone: professional but accessible.
What this prompt doesThis prompt asks Gemini to write a structured draft on your topic: an introduction, three key points, and a conclusion, under 200 words. Replace [TOPIC] with your desired topic, e.g. «benefits of remote work».
  4. 4.To rewrite or improve existing text: select a text fragment in the document, click «Help me write» (a context menu will appear) -> «Refine» -> «[TONE]». In the field that appears, add an instruction such as «make it shorter» or choose one of the ready-made options (Tone, Formalize, Shorten, Elaborate).

If the «Refine» option isn't available, make sure you selected actual text inside the document rather than clicking on an empty spot.

    Prompt
Rewrite the selected text to be more [TONE: concise / formal / friendly]. Keep the same meaning but improve clarity.
What this prompt doesThis prompt asks Gemini to rewrite the selected text, making it more concise, formal, or friendly - pick the right word from the options in brackets to replace [TONE].
  5. 5.To quickly extract the gist from a long text: select all the text (Ctrl+A / Cmd+A), click «Help me write» -> «Refine» -> paste the prompt below. Gemini will produce a short summary you can insert at the top of your document.

Summaries are great for long articles, reports, or meeting notes - cut your reading time down to 1 minute.

    Google Docs (Gemini)
    Prompt
Summarize the selected text in 3 bullet points. Each bullet point should be no longer than one sentence. Focus on the main ideas only.
What this prompt doesThis prompt asks Gemini to create a summary of the selected text as three bullet points, one sentence each. No replacements needed.
  6. 6.Done! You can now use Gemini in any Google Docs document: generate drafts, rewrite, shorten, and summarize text. To cancel the paid subscription after the trial: go to one.google.com -> «Manage subscription» -> «Cancel subscription» - do this before the end of the two-month trial period.

Set a calendar reminder 3 - 5 days before the trial ends to decide: continue with the paid subscription or cancel.
