Create Your Own AI Assistant in Google Gemini in 5 Minutes

  1. 1.Open gemini.google.com in your browser, click the profile icon in the left sidebar, and make sure you're signed into your Google account.

    If you haven't signed in yet, Gemini will prompt you to log in - it takes about 30 seconds.

  2. 2.In the left sidebar, click 「Create a Gem」 or find the 「+ Create」 button (it may be on the 「My Gems」 tab). This opens the interface for building your own AI assistant.

    A Gem is a customized version of Gemini that remembers your instructions for all future conversations.

  3. 3.Give your assistant a name in the 「Gem Name」 field - for example, 「Russian Copy Editor」, 「Procurement Consultant」, or 「Code Helper」.

    The name will be visible to you and in your history, so choose something clear.

  4. 4.In the 「System Instructions」 section in the large text field, add a description of how your assistant should behave. Copy and edit the template below for your task, replacing [ROLE] and [TASK] with specific values.

    ⚠️ System instructions and all content are sent to Google's servers and may be viewed by people - do not paste working code, confidential, or business data. The clearer your instructions, the better your assistant works; 3-5 paragraphs is plenty.

    The first test will show if your instructions need adjusting. Usually 1-2 iterations are needed to reach the quality you want.
