Set up ChatGPT once - it will remember your context in every new chat

Two boxes in settings where you enter once who you are and how it should answer you. No need to repeat this in every new chat

  1. 1.Open ChatGPT, click your avatar in the top right corner -> Settings -> Personalization -> Custom Instructions. Available on all plans, including free.

    Custom Instructions are NOT fully free in terms of length: on the free plan each of the two boxes fits up to 1500 characters, on paid plans (Plus/Pro) - up to 5000 characters (as of July 15, 2026). If the text exceeds the limit - it will be truncated. In Claude, a similar feature is called Project instructions.

  2. 2.In the top box, «What would you like ChatGPT to know about you to provide better responses?», paste a description of yourself and your situation. This will be automatically inserted into all new chats.

    Do not enter passwords, income, client names - the text goes to OpenAI servers and is used to improve responses.

    What this prompt doesContext template: replace the text in square brackets with your own details. Role and goal are the most important - without them, ChatGPT will ask clarifying questions in every chat.
  3. 3.In the bottom box, «How would you like ChatGPT to respond?», paste the response format rules - tone, length, structure.

    The more specific the rules, the more consistent the results. 5 - 8 lines is enough.

    Answer concisely, no fluff or long introductions. Direct answer first, then details. Use lists and short paragraphs. Explain complex topics with simple everyday examples. If you need more context - ask one clarifying question, do not make things up.
    What this prompt doesResponse format template: tweak it to fit your needs. You can replace «concisely» with «in detail» or add «answer in a table».
  4. 4.Turn on the «Enable for new chats» toggle at the bottom of the page and click Save. Done - every new chat now starts with your context.

    The setting does not apply to old chats - only new ones.

  5. 5.Open a new chat and ask a question without any context, for example, «Write a content plan for the week». If ChatGPT does not ask about your niche or language - the setup is working.

    If it still asks for clarification - go back to Custom Instructions and make your wording more specific.
